Disinfectant Testing Requirements Table

Assembled by Benjamin D. Tanner, Ph.D.

One of the most bewildering aspects of commercializing a disinfectant product is determining the specific efficacy tests that are required by the US EPA to register the product and substantiate EPA's various permitted disinfectant efficacy claims.

The information appearing on this page is provided by Antimicrobial Test Laboratories as a general guide, for educational purposes. It is not intended to be a substitute for good, current regulatory advice from EPA's antimicrobial division or a good EPA antimicrobial consultant, such as Scientific and Regulatory Consultants, Inc.

The table below was assembled by Dr. Benjamin Tanner for Antimicrobial Test Laboratories in early 2012. Product testing requirements change, so please check with EPA or a good consultant to verify the accuracy of the table as it pertains to your sanitizer or disinfectant.

Note: a "carrier" is just an individual inoculated and dried test surface.

Hopefully this table has been helpful to the readers of this site. If not, just contact the lab using our web form or give the lab a call and we'll be glad to help you decide on the right study to run.
